My Journey with Digital Technologies in Medication Adherence

Gaye Hafez, Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Altınbas University, Istanbul, Turkey

Digital health has emerged as a multidisciplinary field that attracts attention in health systems all over the world. As the demand for proof of the efficacy of digital health tools in enhancing medication adherence grows, so does the necessity for additional clinical trials. This holds for both Turkey and the Netherlands alike.

During my short-term scientific mission (STSM) at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) in the Netherlands, I had the opportunity to observe the use of digital technologies to improve medication adherence. To improve patient outcomes, innovation meets healthcare in this leading medical centre. Due to the high quality of the health system and the great interest in digital health, I anticipate that these adherence-enhancing technologies will soon experience broader adoption and integration in Turkey.

Throughout my time at UMCG, I have witnessed firsthand how digital solutions can revolutionize treatment outcomes; smart blisters, smart pill dispensers, medication event monitoring systems (MEMS), digital inhalers, shared decision-making toolkits, smart injectors and several mobile apps. Since these products are not reimbursed in the Netherlands, they are not used by patients in the clinic and are used only for research purposes. However, witnessing the impact of these technologies on patient engagement and adherence rates was truly inspiring.

We accelerated our efforts to search for digital companies and include these technologies in the ENABLE repository. We are in close contact with Albert Health, a pioneering company based in Turkey that developed a voice-based health assistant: Albert.

Albert is an evidence-based, multi-chronic disease management platform that leverages artificial intelligence, also allowing patients to engage in conversations about their medication regimens, treatment plans, and health concerns. Albert offers a unique user experience with voice commands. This voice-based reminder designs disease-specific experiences and helps individuals access the most appropriate treatment management for their disease.

“You don’t need to text anymore. Albert answers your questions thanks to his disease-specific language model. Set the pill reminder, check prospectus information (side effects) of your drug and get warnings about your medications.”
